During my daily drawing practice today, I followed a tutorial on how to make your paintings feel more three dimensional using lighting techniques. The tutorial is available here:
The different lighting types are split into layers. There is a background layer for the flat colours, a layer set to overlay for the main light source and then a layer for the ambient occlusion. I think this technique could work well for the creatures that I take forward into a fully-rendered illustration.
For the colour layer, I have used the brush I discovered a few days ago (Squarot) to create a painterly feel. This brush also creates a pleasing textured look when used in just black and white (see far left study).
